Update for July 9

I haven’t updated this in a bit so here’s a short one if people are still following this. Thousands of people have been able to activate their account through the emails sent to them. That’s great. We have had a percentage of people (probably a couple hundred) that reached out for help. If you’re need help, we’re monitoring twitter, the red help button on APSAnet and, of course, the membership email. Those channels are the fastest ways to get help. The main issue is people need to use https://www.apsanet.org/Registration and activate their account.

Update for July 3

Everyone should have received an email to activate your account on Thursday. If you received your activation email and were able to login, you’re good to go. If you forget your password, you can use the “Forgot my password” link on the login page.

If you have  not received the email to activate your account (due to spam folder or whatever reaseon), visit https://www.apsanet.org/Registration
Once there you can enter the email address and one of two things will happen. Either you will receive a message saying the activation email has been sent to you or you will be allowed to start creating a new record. If you are able to start creating a new record, it means the system has no record of the email address you entered in our database. In that case you should see if a different email is associated with your record. Simply hit the back button and try the different email.

Update for July 2

Members will be receiving an email with a link to activate their account within the system. Emails are being sent on a staggered basis but everyone should have theirs by 3 today. If you’re still running into issues, use the help button at the top of apsanet.org. We’ll be monitoring throughout the weekend.

That email from “Dan Gibson”

Yes, it is a legit email. We had some confusion with the setup of the mass emailer configuration. It was supposed to come from the membership email you’re used to seeing. That’s a mistake on our end. Following the activation link is the easiest way to activate your acct in the system after the upgrades.

New usernames

With the changes to the system, we had to ask people to select a new username (though you may be able to just use the same one you had). This wasn’t our preference…we were unable to avoid it. The system is basically connecting all of your old information and you. It has become more of a best practice to periodically force users to change their passwords to help secure the data but we don’t plan on doing that very often.

APSAnet.org maintenance (June 30)

Today’s the big day. We’re going to take the APSAnet.org login system offline around 3:30 pm Eastern time. Unfortunately, there was no way around this. You will be able to access publicly available pages, but you won’t be able to login to conduct any business or any resource that requires a login. If you have questions, you can leave them in the comment area below, and we’ll answer them throughout the day. In the meantime, here’s a few we thought people would ask.

What are we getting?

Lots of stuff. Many of the improvements are behind the scenes that you might not notice. Some of the things you will notice include:

  • A unified shopping cart.
  • Security improvements.
  • Faster browsing experience (due to a new larger server)
  • Better mobile and tablet experience
  • Enhanced job search capabilities
  • Section officers are now able to download their section rosters and get section counts.
  • Expanded profiles
  • Easier process to make donations to more than 35 funds

How do I get help?

You can leave a comment here. We’ll be monitoring throughout the day. We’ll also be monitoring twitter. Beginning July 1, you’ll notice a big red help button at the top of apsanet.org you can use.

Will the website go down?

The website shouldn’t go down. We are switching the website to a larger web server. That server can handle a lot more traffic and will give you a faster/better experience as you browse the website. However, the way domain settings work, the change from the old web server to the new one should just happen at some point this evening.

When will the maintenance period end?

It’s scheduled to end no later than July 2 at 9 a.m. Eastern. After that, login functionality will be restored, and you’ll be asked to select a username and password when you enter the system for the first time. Beta testers should be able to login with the credentials you were using for beta testing. Members that haven’t logged in after a few days will receive an email prompt unless you’ve chosen not to receive emails from us.

Are we done now?

No. Websites are in a constant state of evolution. It’s just the nature of the world we live in today. With constantly changing threats, technologies and devices, among other factors, websites have to change to keep up. We’ll have some smaller maintenance windows throughout the summer, but you probably won’t notice them other than to see a new feature come online.

What type of prep work went on behind the scenes?

For the past few months, we’ve been reaching out to members, through surveys, emails, and phone calls, to determine the next steps for apsanet.org. We’ve examined different ways to improve user experiences around ejobs, journal fulfillment, member directory, single sign on, conference proposal submissions, and section services among other functionalities. We’ve recruited members to serve as beta testers for these critical areas. We’ve been testing the beta site for weeks. We’ve opened the system up to more than 150 APSA members and staff for beta testing.


A quick note on the timing of this maintenance. We put a great deal of thought into when this would have the least impact on APSA members. The week leading up to the Fourth of July, and the week following, are historically low website traffic periods. By now, traditionally more than 80% of attendees of the annual meeting have registered. We’re not at the height of the job search period. There were many other factors that were considered in the timing. We thought this time period would minimize the impact on members.


Thanks to the many members that have provided feedback for the next evolution of APSAnet.org. What you see is a much better product because of their work.

    • Thanks Jen. The database upgrades are going well so far. We’re on track to open everything back up tomorrow. If nothing else, I think everyone will be really happy with the new unified shopping cart.

      • I saw the shopping cart and couldn’t help but try it out. Obviously can’t use it yet, but it holds stuff! Really terrific improvements all around. Kudos to you and your team!
