eJobs Data: The 2025 vs 2026 Job Market | APSA Data on the Profession

In the first half of the 2025-26 academic year, the political science job market largely mirrored 2024-25, though with fewer postings overall. Listings declined from fall to winter in both years, then rose with the new semester. Tenure-track positions dominated in the fall, while non-tenure-track roles were more common in winter. Compared to 2024-25, 2025-26 saw more postings in American and Comparative Politics, and fewer in the “Other” subfield. The beginning of the 2025-26 academic year saw fewer jobs posted than 2024-25, with the exception of December. On average, 13 fewer jobs were posted each month in 2025-26 than in 2024-25.

 

Despite fewer overall numbers of job postings, the proportion of tenure-track and non-tenure-track jobs posted was nearly identical between 2024-25 and 2025-26 (54% tenure-track jobs in 2024-25, 53% in 2025-26). The distribution of subfields listed in job postings shifted slightly in 2025-26, with more listings for jobs in American Politics and Comparative Politics and fewer listings for positions in Political Theory and “Other” subfields.
