Join us for the first professional development virtual workshop of the 2024-2025 academic year led by the APSA Committee on the Status of Community Colleges in the Profession on “Curricular Innovations in Political Science at Community Colleges.”
This workshop will allow faculty to share their classroom innovations for the fall 2024 term. Curricular innovations include utilizing new textbooks or workbooks, creating a new active learning experience, and utilizing APSA Educate resources to improve face-to-face or online learning environments. The workshop will have up to 30 minutes of presentations and 30 minutes of questions and answers, and general discussion time. Presentations will be recorded, while the discussion section will not be recorded.

Meet the Panelists

Professor La Della L. Levy holds advanced degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies in Adult Education emphasis on teaching diverse at-risk learners and in Political Science, emphasis on Political Philosophy, earned at San Francisco State University (SFSU). She is also an alumna of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) with an earned Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, emphasis on Political Philosophy. She has been a Political Science educator for twenty-four years. A tenured Professor at the College of Southern Nevada, Professor Levy teaches courses in American Politics and Government, American Public Policy, Political Philosophy, Social Justice Movements, Minority Politics and Women in Politics. She has also developed the following readers: Women in Politics, American Public Policy and the current Anthology, Social Justice Movements ©2017, Cognella Academic Publishing and the 2nd edition, Social Justice Movements ©2023.
Professor Levy has presented at various Political Science academic conferences nationally and internationally, created mini conferences, chaired panel roundtables and conference sections at the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the State of Nevada Diversity Summit, the Western Political Science Association (WPSA), the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA), the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS), NISOD- International Conference on Teaching, Learning and Leadership Excellence, the Northeastern Political Science Association (NPSA) and at the Midwestern Political Science Association (MPSA).
Professor Levy also co-chairs the Western Political Science Association Community College Committee and serves on the Executive Council for the Western Political Science Association. Professor Levy is passionate about infusing social justice pedagogy in the teaching of Political Science courses and is committed to developing academic conference professional development sessions that focus on decolonizing pedagogy with an emphasis social justice in the teaching of Political Science Courses. In addition, Professor Levy also serves on the American Political Science Association Committee on the Status of Community Colleges in the Profession.

Dr. Josue (Josh) Franco is a tenured Associate Professor at Cuyamaca College in San Diego County, California. Born in Mexico and raised in Los Angeles County, he is a proud first-generation college graduate who holds A.A. degrees in economics and political science from Cerritos College, and a B.A. in public policy and M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Merced. As a first generation college graduate, introducing political science to the next generation of leaders and scholars is his mission. He is a 2024-2025 APSA Congressional Fellow and Member of the APSA Committee on the Status of Community Colleges in the Profession.

Dr. Helen Chang is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College of The City University of New York (CUNY) in the Bronx, New York. She holds a B.A. in International Relations and French and an M.A in Sociology from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the CUNY Graduate Center. Her research interests include municipal election reforms, the structure of local electoral management bodies, and teaching and learning in political science. Helen has been a participant of APSA’s Teaching and Learning Symposiums: Teaching Political Science at Community Colleges in 2022 and De-Centering the U.S. in the Global Politics Classroom in 2024. As part of these symposiums, she has contributed a Community Mapping assignment and a Design Your Own Comparison Indicator assignment to APSA Educate. She is also currently serving as the co-chair of the APSA Committee on the Status of Community Colleges in the Profession and as a member of the 2024 TLC at APSA Program Committee.
About the Status Committee
The committee on the Status of Community Colleges in the Profession works to create an inclusive culture for community college faculty within the profession, increase community college faculty membership, build relationships across higher education institutions, and recommend programming to address the unique needs of community college faculty.
