Chart of the Month: Where in the United States are Political Science Jobs

During the 2018-2019 academic year, 1,220 jobs were posted to APSA’s eJobs service. Positions were located across the globe and the United States, spanning 32 countries outside the US and 45 US States. With 119 jobs posted, California had more job postings than any other state, followed by New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Of those states, those in the Northeast US Census Region had by far the highest tenure track to non-tenure track ratio (50.4% tenure track to 49.6% non-tenure track), followed by the South (64.2% TT/ 35.8% NTT), the Midwest (65.4% TT, 34.6% NTT), the West (69.9% TT/ 30.1% NTT), and International positions (75.3% TT/ 24.7% NTT).

Of the 1,220 jobs posted, 89% were for junior faculty positions. American Politics, International Relations, and Other were the most common subfields in junior faculty positions, where jobs could list up to three subfields. 58% of junior faculty eJobs postings were for Tenure-Track positions. This proportion varied within subfields, with Public Administration, Public Law, and Other containing proportionally more tenure-track positions.
