Teaching in Challenging Times Revisited—A Perspective from Texas

COVID, numerous protests, and the events of January 6, 2021 gave political scientists much to discuss in the classroom and presented many challenges. We recognized that our students needed a better understanding of historical events and more civic education. Then came the 2023 Texas legislative session that banned diversity, equity and inclusion offices in Texas higher education. Much to our dismay the 2025 legislative session in Texas created more legislation aimed to further restrict activities in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and analyze the changes in higher education in Texas and to point out that other states are following with their own restrictive legislation.
