Stigma Consciousness and American Identity: The Case of Muslims in the United States

The most recent manifestations of racialization target Muslims in the United States. Government policies that profile Muslims, anti-Muslim public sentiment, and hate crimes have escalated in recent years, serving as a salient part of the Muslim experience in the United States. Given this escalation, how do Msulims reconcile these forms of racialization? Although we do have knowledge of the effects of Latinos’ and Black Americans’ racialization in the United States, our understanding of the impact that the racialization of Muslims has on their identity development and behavior is limited.
