Since 2017, APSA’s Project on Women and Minorities (P-WAM) has tracked representation trends in the political science profession. In this new Chart of the Month, we compare data from 2016–17 to 2022–23, focusing on changes in race, tenure status, and gender representation across faculty and student populations.
Key highlights include:
-
An increase in the proportion of non-white faculty across all tenure types, with the largest gains among tenure-track and non-tenure-track positions.
-
A growing percentage of women among both faculty and incoming PhD students, with the largest share of women found among incoming PhD cohorts.
-
A persistent gap between the rising number of women students and a slower increase among women faculty.
