Data on the Profession: 2023–2024 Political Science Enrollments and Curriculum Trends

This month’s Chart of the Month features new data from APSA’s 2023–2024 Departmental Survey (Part I), which collected responses from 120 U.S. political science departments between April and May 2025. The data provide insights into undergraduate and graduate enrollments, degree completions, and curriculum patterns across BA, MA, and PhD-granting institutions.

Key Findings:

  • Undergraduate BA programs continued to enroll the most students and award the most degrees.
  • A larger share of departments reported enrollment growth in 2023–24: over 5% indicated a significant increase and another 5% reported moderate growth—up from just 1.5% and 22% respectively in 2022–23.
  • Private institutions reported a sharp rise in the average number of PhDs awarded.
  • Curriculum structures and enrollment sizes continue to vary significantly by institution and department type.
