The American Political Science Association (APSA) and the National Capital Area Political Science Association (NCAPSA) are pleased to announce a call for proposals for political scientists and practitioners to participate in a single-day workshop.
The workshop aims to provide a space where scholars and practitioners with a commitment to civic engagement can collaborate, build supportive relationships, and share practical guidance for leading community-engaged projects. The workshop will use a single-track format where presenters and participants will consistently engage with one another throughout the day. The workshop will culminate with NCAPSA’s brief annual business meeting and a celebratory reception.

About the Workshop
APSA and NCAPSA are seeking presenters who can address and highlight successful civic-engagement programs/initiatives that have been planned and carried out collaboratively by two or more academic institutions, government offices, and/or nongovernmental organizations (i.e. non-profit, for-profit, or hybrid organizations). Formal conference papers are not expected or desired; instead, presenters should come prepared to make a polished presentation that describes their project and partnership(s), outlines participant learning outcomes, describes project impacts, explores adaptability to other settings, and reflects on lessons learned. Presentations will be recorded and shared on APSA Educate. Presentations that include collaborative teams of political scientists and community partners from any combination of the types of institutions noted above are especially encouraged.
Examples of possible topics or techniques include, but are not limited to:
- Ongoing institutional partnerships between colleges/universities and external partners to foster civic engagement;
- Grant-funded public outreach and civic initiatives;
- Organizational programs that foster youth civic engagement;
- Classroom-based activities created in conjunction with outside civic organizations;
- Research collaborations between students/faculty and government entities;
- Participatory budgeting;
- Project-based civic learning;
- Internal campus partnerships linking academic work with co-curricular engagement; and
- Service-learning activities that support external organizations.
Presenters will be expected to:
- Attend and participate in all workshop activities throughout the day;
- Make a presentation of approximately 15 minutes in length, as described above, followed by post-presentation Q&A;
- Participate in any follow-up required by APSA in order to make session recordings available and share related resources for publication on APSA Educate.
Starting Your Application
Proposals should be submitted online here and should include: Current CV or resume for each presenter AND 1-2 page proposal summarizing the project, explaining how the presentation will address the requirements listed above, and noting the learning outcomes for workshop participants. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by the end of August 2024. Need-based travel grants are available.
