APSA Statement on Confirmation of Dr. Colleen J. Shogan, Archivist of the United States

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Political Science Association (APSA) is delighted the U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Colleen J. Shogan to be the next Archivist of the United States and head of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

As APSA noted in our August 4, 2022 statement, Dr. Shogan is a celebrated political scientist who holds “an outstanding record of executive leadership and service in government, an extensive record of research management, and an abiding commitment to the enduring value of the National Archives to our democracy and an informed citizenry.” In addition, Dr. Shogan’s confirmation is historic; she will be the first woman appointed as Archivist of the United States in a permanent capacity.

Dr. Shogan most recently served as director of the David M. Rubenstein Center for White House History at the White House Historical Association. She has served as a APSA council member and as president of the National Capital Area Political Science Association. Formerly an adjunct professor of political science at Georgetown University, Dr. Shogan has published books and scholarly articles on the presidency, Congress, and women in politics. She has also held several positions at the Library of Congress and Congressional Research Service, including serving as the Assistant Deputy Librarian for Collections and Services, the Deputy Director of the Congressional Research Service, and the Deputy Director of National and International Outreach. Dr. Shogan received a Ph.D. in political science from Yale University and served as an APSA Congressional Fellow.

The Archivist of the United States is responsible for the administration of federal public records and acts as a trusted voice within the research community across disciplines.  We are proud to have Dr. Shogan representing the political science discipline in the federal government and are eagerly looking forward to working with her as she assumes her new role.
