Fri, September 4, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Hilton, Continental Parlor 2

Session Description

The increasing role of women and children in violent extremism iswomen-and-children explored in this panel. The papers presented will draw from cases throughout Africa and the Middle East to compare the processes of involvement of youth into militarized conflicts. Additional focus will be on the role of children as child soldiers in Africa and the legal ramifications of youth mobilization. The panel examines women and children as both victims of violence (in many cases sexual violence) as well as perpetrators of violence and the interchangeability of these roles. Several papers are drawn from original field research in Africa and South Asia.
