This virtual roundtable brings together five political science practitioners with decades of combined experience charting careers in government, higher education administration, polling and research firms, think tanks, and foundations. Join the National Capital Area Political Science Association and the American Political Science Association for a virtual roundtable discussion and audience Q&A to learn best practices and key insights to navigating and succeeding in a career as a political science practitioner. NCAPSA and/or APSA membership is required to attend.
Meet the Participants:
Dr. Colleen Shogan, Archivist of the United States, National Archives and Records Administration
Colleen Shogan became the 11th Archivist of the United States in May 2023. Most recently, Dr. Shogan served as Senior Vice President and Director of the David M. Rubenstein Center at the White House Historical Association. She previously worked in the U.S. Senate and as a senior executive at the Library of Congress. She earned her Ph.D. in American Politics from Yale University.
Dr. Natalie Jackson, Vice President, GQR
Natalie Jackson is Vice President at GQR. Prior to joining GQR, she was Director of Research at PRRI and Managing Director of Polling at Just Capital. Earlier in her career, she held senior and management positions at the Marist Institute for Public Opinion and The Huffington Post. Natalie earned her Ph.D. in political science from the University of Oklahoma and was a postdoctoral associate at the Duke University Initiative on Survey Methodology.
Dr. Meghan McConaughey, Chief of Staff and Director, Congressional Fellowship Program, APSA
Meghan McConaughey serves as Chief of Staff and Director of the Congressional Fellowship Program at the American Political Science Association (APSA). She leads all aspects of the Congressional Fellowship Program, including supporting fellows in preparing for, securing, and being successful in their placements; organizing the fellow recruitment and selection process; and managing relationships with program partners and host offices. She also provides support for APSA governance logistics and organization. Meghan earned her Ph.D. in political science from Georgetown University.
Dr. Beatriz Rey, Fellow, POPVOX Foundation
Beatriz Rey is a Fellow at the POPVOX Foundation and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of São Paulo. She previously was a Visiting Fellow at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University and a Senior Researcher at the Center for Studies on the Brazilian Congress at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She worked as a legislative assistant for Rep. Gregory W. Meeks in the U.S. House of Representatives. Beatriz earned her Ph.D. in political science from Syracuse University.
Dr. J.D. Rackey, Senior Policy Analyst, Bipartisan Policy Center (Moderator)
J.D. Rackey is a Senior Policy Analyst in the Structural Democracy Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center. He previously was the Director of Legislative Studies at the Sunwater Institute. He served as an APSA Public Service Fellow and Professional Staff with the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress. J.D. earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Oklahoma.
About NCAPSA: The National Capital Area Political Science Association (NCAPSA) is the official political science association for the National Capital Area, including the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia. Its members include political scientists in universities, think tanks, government and other applied settings, and graduate students. NCAPSA sponsors research workshops, panel discussions, and other events in the D.C. metropolitan area to foster connections and improve professional dialogue between all political scientists in the Capital Area. In particular, NCAPSA seeks ways to build connections between academic and applied political scientists, as well as the general public, to further the interests of political scientists and improve our understanding of political processes.
