Meet Nahrain Rasho, 2019 First Generation Scholar in the Profession

Nahrain Rasho is a PhD Candidate in the department of political Science at the University of California, Davis. Her research focuses on nationalism, ethnic conflict, and state-building strategies in ethnically divided societies. Nahrain’s dissertation examines the consequences of post-conflict state-building institutions in Iraq and tests whether Kurdish Regional Autonomy in Iraq shaped conflict among local ethnic groups. Nahrain conducted six weeks of fieldwork research in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq running semi-structured interviews with civilians, activists, and political representatives. Her research has been funded by the Rothchild Memorial Graduate Research Award, the Suad Joseph’s Graduate Student Research Award on Middle East and/or South Asia Studies, and the Institute of Social Science Dissertation Advancement Award. Nahrain is thankful for the financial support of the First Generation Scholar Travel Reimbursement Grant that helped Nahrain attend the 2019 annual meeting for the American Political Science Association in Washington D.C. where she presented her dissertation chapter.

About the APSA First Generation Scholar in the Profession Travel Reimbursement Grant
In 2015, the APSA Executive Council approved a new standing Committee on First Generation Higher Education Scholars in the Profession, parallel to the existing APSA status committees.  The goal is to bring focused attention to the ways in which class, economic inequality, and mobility can affect political scientists’ ability to thrive educationally and professionally, perhaps throughout their careers. The APSA Committee on the Status of First Generation Scholars matched contributions that were made to the APSA Annual Fund during one week in September 2019 to support the professional development support of first gen scholars in the profession.  Learn more.

  1. Hi Nahrain
Such a valuable and interesting field. I want to bring your attention to a new research that just started at Stanford University that is very much related to your field. The research will highlight the ISIS persecution of Assyrians in Iraq, but also document Assyrian refugees who were uprooted from homeland to USA in the past 50 years.
